Celebrate Dad with Presence

Dear Friend

Lately, I’ve been moving through waves of heartbreak, anger and clarity. The rise in antisemitism isn’t abstract for me—it’s ancestral, cellular, present. It rattles something deep. But instead of collapsing into the fear, I’m doing what I’ve learned to do: I’m sitting with it. I’m breathing with it. I’m letting it burn through the noise and reveal what really matters.

In 1933, my birth grandfather, pictured above, Alexander Weber, was arrested and deported to Oranienberg four weeks after Hitler came to power.  He was persecuted in the first concentration camp the Nazi regime established.  The crime? We’ve been told he was arrested for hunting. Really, in a city? In Berlin? We have a document that actually says his!  We know he was a Catholic man who had converted to Judaism and married a Jewish woman.  This is quite likely the reason.  But the other story is that we are told he refused to give the nazi salute a a rally.  At a march.  His version of a peaceful protest.  To not follow he fold.  To critically think for himself - today we call this moral clarity.

What is happening in our country right now is unprecedented and we are all asked to consider many questions:   Would you hide me?  And would I hide you?  Where to peacefully protest this absurd waste of tax payers’ dollars for an egotistical birthday parade while thousands of families’ lives are shattered by deportation, DOGE,  bigotry and hate.

This moment feels like a threshold—one we didn’t ask for, but one that asks something of us. It asks me to stay soft in a hard world that isn't taking care of its neighbors. To stay tethered to truth when lies are loud. To remember that every act of creativity, connection and courage can be an ac of resistance.

Wha does it mean to be an upstander?

Show up.  Show up for scientists, show up for teachers, show up for journalists and most of all, show up for your neighbors.  Reach out to your representatives.  Engage on the local level. Just show up.

I don’t have answers, just a deep pull toward presence. So I’m making space for quiet to center my voice.  I’m making space for ritual to prepare for honest conversation. For art that heals and disrupts. I’m finding strength in ancestral memory and the resilience of the fathers, brothers, husbands, sons, uncles and cousins who came before me. And I’m anchoring myself in the belief that light is not a passive thing—it’s a choice. It’s a practice.

Awake. Present. Heart open. Meditating. Listening.  Manifesting light.

A heartfelt Father's Day to all of the men around us.  To Alexander - may your years of persecution be a lesson to all of us - never give up -  never stop loving the people who open your heart. May you, and all the men around us, continue to manifest light now and always.

Everyone be safe.  Use your voices and sing a song of protest filled with light.

May Their Memories be for a Blessing

We mourn the return of those who will not come home alive. The bodies of Israeli American couple Judi Weinstein Haggai and Gad Haggai, murdered during the October 7 attacks, were recently recovered from Gaza. We also honor Nattapong Pinta, a Thai national abducted by Hamas-led terrorists that same day, whose body has now been returned to his family. This week also marks the recovery of Yair Yaakov whose body was recovered by IDF troops after over 600 days.

Here at home, we’re also reeling from the recent violent attack outside of a synagogue in Boulder, Colorado—a chilling reminder that antisemitism is not confined to distant conflict zones. Hate continues to cross borders, in both words and violence.

It is a somber reminder of all who remain unaccounted for—and of the families still waiting for truth, closure and justice.

Let us remember. Let us act. And let us continue to dream of a world where peace, safety and dignity are not privileges—but rights for all.

May Judi, Gad, Yair and Nattapong's memories be for a blessing.
